A Dream, a Truck and a Craftsman’s Experience
After working for other contractors in the field of masonry restoration for 16 years, David Schickel decided to branch out on his own in 1979. Armed with a dream, a truck and on-the-job experience, he and his wife, Phyllis, who had a background in retail, office work and bookkeeping, established the D. Schickel Company, Inc. Phyllis handled the day-to-day office responsibilities and David did the physical labor.
In 1981 they incorporated the business. Phyllis became 51% owner and president of the company in 1983. As the business grew, so did the Schickel family. David and Phyllis have three sons, all of whom have grown up in the business. Today, John (Jay) and Jeremy are involved in the daily running of the business. As vice president, Jay is responsible for scheduling and estimating, and Jeremy is an estimator and assistant project manager. David, Jr., who recently joined the Sellersburg Fire Department, continues to provide safety and employee training for the family business.
In 2005, Phyllis took 70% ownership and the business is certified as a Woman Owned Business in both Indiana and in Louisville. David, Sr., who is semi-retired, stays on board as a consultant. In 2009 the Schickels decided to rebrand the company as Schickel Masonry Restoration to better identify what they do.
